The Postharvest Education Foundation offers global postharvest e-learning programs, training materials and participatory workshops on appropriate postharvest technologies for participants in more than 15 developing countries. In association with our local partners, we are launching a new program “Small-Scale Postharvest Horticultural Technologies Short Course/ Study Tour” in February 2015 to be offered for up to 45 participants in Arusha, Northern Tanzania.
As a major global tourist destination, the demand in Northern Tanzania for a large variety of fresh produce has developed following the country of origins of tourists and their eating habits. The varieties of fresh produce demanded by tourist lodges, mountain climbers, hotels and restaurants have increased since 1990s, and now many types of fresh produce are produced in the region, and include vegetables (leafy vegetables, fruit vegetables, tubers, root crops, shoots, immature flowers), fruits and herbs. Cut flowers are also increasing in demand especially for hotels and restaurants. The small scale farmers in Northern Tanzania have to be creative and innovative in their postharvest handling in order to meet the changing demands of the markets, including organic vegetables and processed food products. To strengthen the competitiveness of small scale fresh produce farmers in the region, a Postharvest Training and Services Center has been established in Arusha to help farmers and intermediaries to create higher value markets via reducing losses, adding value and creating efficient and effective value chains.
