In 2009, total Saudi agricultural products imports were valued at $14.2 billion, an increase of 49 percent compared to 2006 ($9.5 billion). The huge increase in the imports of agricultural products in 2009 is attributed to inflation in world agricultural products prices and increase in demand for food products in Saudi Arabia. In 2009, U.S. total agricultural product exports to Saudi Arabia decreased by 21 percent to $721 million compared to 2008. On the other hand, USDA data for January –August 2010, indicates that U.S. total agricultural product exports to Saudi Arabia reached $580 million, an increase of 27 percent compared to the same period in 2009. As the potential for agricultural production is limited in Saudi Arabia, the demand for imported food products will remain very strong in the future.
