Senegal efforts to emerge as an alternative trade hub in West Africa remain hampered by high energy prices, deficient infrastructure and poor investment climate. Nonetheless, residents in Dakar, including a large expatriate population, have a relatively high disposable income which translates into a vibrant retail market for food products and other consumer goods. Senegal's geographic position vis-a-vis the U.S. east and gulf coasts, its modern communication infrastructure, and its favorable trade policy offer trade opportunities for U.S. exporters, especially for intermediate and consumer-ready products.
