The Turkish market offers both rewards and challenges to the U.S. exporter. It has a large and growing population that is rapidly changing its consumption patterns. Historically, export opportunities have been better for U.S. bulk commodities than for high-value consumer products. High tariffs, numerous non-tariff barriers and competition from both domestic industries and Europe have limited U.S. access to this market. In October 2009 a new biotech regulation was published effectively blocking biotech and biotech products imports. Significant U.S. processed food exports to Turkey include condiments, snack foods and Tex-Mex products.
