Technological advances the Argentine has been in recent years such that now stands at the forefront worldwide. The explosion of agriculture, tillage, GM crops and the widespread use of glyphosate have raised controversy, especially regarding the toxicity of the latter. Before weeds are controlled with tillage and these involve serious problems of erosion and soil degradation. Tillage and herbicides have changed the situation and consequently the sustainability of production systems.
A high heterogeneity characterizes vineyards due to several factors such as pedo-morphological characteristics, seasonal weather conditions and cropping practices. This spatial variability in the vineyards leads to a variation in grape quality and yields ultimately leading to an overall reduction of wine quality and volume. In order to produce higher-quality products, vineyard management decisions ought to account for spatial variability.
Sensory and Consumer Evaluation of Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward') Produced Under Different Pollination Techniques
Kiwifruit producers aim to obtain a large fruit production under healthy and environmentally-friendly growing conditions, with kiwifruits weighing more than 90 g/unit but maintaining adequate sensory quality. In Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward’, the final size of the fruit is closely related to the number of seeds per fruit, which depends on the number of ovules in flowers and the number of pollen grains that reach the stigmatic surface.
Effect of Mulching Materials on Growth and Yield Attributes and Enhancing Farm Income Through Ginger Cultivation Under Rainfed Rice Based Production System
Trials were conducted for two consecutive years during 2001-03 in farmers’ field in the Kymore plateau region (Jabalpur) of Madhya Pradesh to evaluate five treatments consisting of mulching with paddy straw, palas leaves, dry grass, polyethylene sheet and control (without mulch) in randomized block design with five replications. The findings revealed that use of mulching material in ginger enhanced growth and yield attributes as well as rhizome yield along with higher economics as compared to no mulch.
Extending Harvest Duration in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) with a Combination of Varieties, Row Spacings and Planting Systems
A field experiment with 4 row spacings (60, 80, 100 and 120 cm) and 3 planting (Sole Krish, Sole Shivalika and Mixed) systems on tomato cv. Krish (Indeterminate) and Shivalika (Determinate) were laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three replications. The results revealed that the 60 cm spacing and (50 % Krish + 50 % Shivalika) planting system in individual and interaction responded better with respect to fruit yield per unit area, harvest duration and economic returns due to greater crop biomass productions.
Temperate fruit and nut species require exposure to chilling conditions in winter to break dormancy and produce high yields. Adequate winter chill is an important site characteristic for commercial orchard operations, and quantifying chill is crucial for orchard management. Climate change may impact winter chill. With a view to adapting orchards to climate change, this review assesses the state of knowledge in modelling winter chill and the performance of various modelling approaches.
