Diseases caused by Alternaria species are very common and are worldwide in their occurrance. Important host plants include a variety of crops such as apples, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, Chinese cabbage, tomatoes, bok choy, an citrus, plus many plants used as ornamentals and number of weeds.

Fresh-market vegetable supplies have been sporadic following several December freezes in Florida, periods of cool, wet weather in coastal California, and several periods of subfreezing temperatures in California and Arizona. In addition, Mexican vegetables were damaged by a 2-day freeze in early February (extent of damage is unknown at this time). As a result, vegetable prices are now at or above the highs experienced a year earlier.

Fresh market vegetable and melon production for the 24 selected crops estimated in 2010 totaled 435 million hundredweight, down 1 percent from last year. Harvested area covered 1.71 million acres, up slightly from 2009. Value of the 2010 crop is estimated at 11.2 billion dollars, up 3 percent from a year ago. The three largest crops, in terms of production, are onions, head lettuce, and watermelons, which combined to account for 38 percent of the total production.

Optimum O2 or CO2 Atmosphere for Storing Broccoli Florets at Various Temperatures

‘Marathon’ broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) florets were stored in air, low O2 (0.25%, 0.5%, and 1 %) or high CO2 (3%,6%, and 10%) at 0, 5, and 10C. Oxygen consumption and CO2 production were reduced under low O2 or high CO2 atmosphere, the reduction being greater at lower O2 and higher CO2 levels. NO differences were found in ethylene production among the different atmospheres.

Changes in acetaldehyde, ethanol and amino acid concentrations in broccoli florets during air and controlled atmosphere storage

Acetaldehyde, ethanol and non-protein bound amino acids were determined in broccoli florets (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica cv. Marathon) stored for 7 days at 10°C in air or controlled atmospheres (0.125, 0.25, or 0.5% O2 alone or in combination with 20% CO2, or 20% CO2 in N2) followed by 2 days aeration. Floret yellowing was visible at days 7 and 9 in air. Low O2 or low O2 plus high CO2 atmospheres delayed yellowing.

Fresh vegetables: Prior to the recent freezing temperatures in Florida, the outlook for fresh vegetables this winter indicated improved yields and supplies. At the same time, demand was expected to remain sluggish as consumers remain conservative, especially with regard to away from home meals. Assuming freeze damage is less severe than last January, the winter price outlook generally favors prices that are historically strong but average just below the freeze-affected highs of a year earlier.
