OhioStateExtension.gifSnap Beans

Snap beans also are known as green beans and include wax (yellow), podded and pole beans. Most commercial beans in Ohio are produced on bush-type plants. Pods are flat, oval or round, depending on variety. Pole beans are grown in hills around a pole or on a trellis. Good commercial yields for fresh market are 150+ bu/A.

OhioStateExtension.gifThe demand for ethnic vegetables is rapidly increasing in the United States. A large ethnic Asian population and health-conscious American consumer’s desire for variety play a major role in boosting the demand for Asian vegetables. Asian vegetables are those that have originated from East Asia (China, Japan and Korea) and Southeast Asia ( Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, etc.).

USDA.pngHarvested area for fall-season potatoes is forecast at 882,300 acres, 4 percent lower than 2009. Given average yields, fall potato production is expected to decline from the 393.5 million hundredweight of a year earlier. Because of tighter world supplies, grower prices are expected to average above year-earlier levels during the 2010/11 marketing year.
